Rubbish & Recycling Rubbish is collected every Tuesday, usually between 11am and 1pm. Your rubbish should be left bagged on the curb side. It is usually best to put your rubbish out early, but please do not leave it out overnight as it may be attacked by animals. Note that the District Council will not collect garden rubbish, unless it is contained in special bags (see below). There is also a special green box collection each week for recycled rubbish (see below). After a Bank Holiday the collection will be on the Wednesday of the following week, returning to Tuesdays after that. Following a double Bank Holiday (e.g. Good Friday and Easter Monday) the collection will be on the Thursday of the following week, on the Wednesday of the week after that and then return to Tuesdays. Special “backdoor” collections may be made for the elderly and/or disabled; further information may be found here. Ashbury Green Box Recycling There is a special collection in the Village for recyclable rubbish every Friday. You can obtain a free recycling box from the District Council (click here), enabling you to recycle paper, clothing, cans and aerosols, glass, mobile phones, batteries and plastic bottles (the only plastic accepted to date). Click here to find out how to recycle items that cannot go in the green box. Home Composting Around a quarter of household waste is made up of organic material. This can be easily composted to generate an excellent loam for enriching your garden soil. Vale residents can purchase home compost converters for as little as £8. Click here for more information on home composting. See also information below about brown box recycling of garden rubbish. Recycling Centres The nearest recyling centre to Ashbury may be found at Stanford in the Vale (Address: Faringdon Road, Stanford in the Vale, Faringdon, SN7 8LD). Please note that small electrical items can now be recycled at all of Oxfordshire wast recycling centres, including items such as clocks, games consoles and hairdryers. Water Butts These can be purchased at local garden centres in order to recycle rainwater; they are useful year round, but invaluable at times of drought and hosepipe bans. Garden Rubbish (Brown Box Recycling) As part of its commitment to reducing the use of landfill sites the Council encourages residents to compost garden waste at home (see below). However, a brown box garden waste and cardboard collection scheme is now available in all areas of the Vale all year round. Once composted centrally the contents of the brown boxes are used on the land. Boxes are available in a large 240 litre size and in a smaller 140 litre size; they will be emptied fortnightly and there is an annual rental and emptying charge of £29 for either size. For more information click here. Or telephone 01235 520202 to order a brown box.
