Data for the census years 1841 to 1891 were transcribed from records by Peter Knott and are reproduced here with kind permission of Leonie Knott. Data for the census years 1901 and 1911 were transcribed from records by Diane McLaren. Surnames recorded in any given year are indicated by crosses.
Please note that it was not uncommon for surnames to be written down by data collectors from the spoken word; thus spellings may either be incorrect, or may vary between years for the same name (potential examples have been numbered in the tables below). Moreover, the appearance of any given surname in more than one year does not necessarily mean it belonged to the same family. Interested readers are advised to check the original records for additional clues as to spelling and common identity (e.g. via Christian names, addresses, occupations etc.).
Interestingly a few surnames appear in each of the eight decades covered and these have been highlighted in yellow.
